Professor Finkelstein's book Why Smart Executives Fail: And What You Can Learn From Their Mistakes, in which he shows executives how to analyze failure and use the lessons learned to develop practical, constructive strategies for success, has been a #1 bestseller in the U.S. and Japan and translated into 11 different languages. His Strategic Leadership: Top Executives and Their Effects on Organizations is considered one of the definitive books on the subject of strategic leadership and management of mergers and acquisitions. His new book, Think Again: Why Good Leaders Make Bad Decisions and How to Keep it From Happening to You, co-authored by Jo Whitehead and Andrew Campbell, was published in January 2009.
Finkelstein has served as a consultant and speaker for many major companies in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Mexico, including Aetna, American Express, BASF, Boeing, Deloitte & Touche, Deutsche Bank, General Electric, Glaxo, Hasbro, Mayo Clinic, McKinsey, Monsanto, Onninen Oy, Price Waterhouse, Prudential, Raytheon, Roche, and Wyeth.
Professor Finkelstein has taught executive development programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia for many of the world’s top business schools, including Northwestern University, Duke University, Bocconi School of Management, London Business School, Australian Graduate School of Management, and the Helsinki School of Economics.
Professor Finkelstein is faculty director of the Tuck Executive Program, and also teaches in Leadership and Strategic Impact and Strategic Financial Leadership Program.
